Red shiners are very hardy and will over winter fine in your pond. I have
a few in a small pond on my deck which survived over the last winter with
only an aquarium heater which kept a small hole opened in over an inch of
ice cover with a water depth of 6 inches for several weeks.

Whatever you do DO NOT RELEASE ANY OF THESE FISH INTO WATERS OUTSIDE
THEIR NATURAL RANGE!!! They are terrific colonizers and have caused major
problems other native fish populations when they have been released
outside their natural range!!!!
