Most eclipse systems are difficult to grow plants in because they don't have
enough light. The usual "watts per gallon" rule of thumb says that 2 watts
per gallon is the low end of good for plants; most eclipse systems come in
around 1 or 1.5 watts per gallon. Not that you can't grow plants in them - I
have a wonderful Eclipse system 3 that grows bolbitis, crypts, and anubias
just fine at 30W over 29 gallons. And experienced aquatic gardeners can grow
just about anything in those lower light conditions.

The thing is, you can't just put a higher watt bulb in - if the thing comes
with an 8 watt flourescent tube, that's the watts you gots. You just have to
decide if that's enough for what you want to do.
