I found some outdoor lamps at Home Depot that are heavy duty cast Aluminum,
the price was $20 each. The housings have the bell shape that the
commercial MH systems have, and they came with ceramic medium screw bases
installed. I drilled cooling holes around the narrow end of the housing to
allow the rising heat to exit, and installed an extension pipe between the
swivel and the mounting bracket so that the lamps hang about 12 inches from
the water surface. These are mounted to the ceiling and the wires are run
down the wall with Wiremold. I have the ballasts mounted underneath the
tank in a fan cooled enclosure. The entire thing cost less than $150
(because I was able to scrounge around my company's maintenance department
for some surplus ballasts, a cooling fan and enclosure) plus several
weekends to put together.
