When you opened the canister, were there any bubbles/foam, or did the
mixture look the same as when you put it in?

I'd be inclined to wash the canister with soap and rinse really well.

This is the recipe I use in mine:
1 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp yeast
1/2 cup sugar
Fill with lukewarm water to top line just like in the instructions.
