The meltdown occurs when things change quickly, not drastically, that is you
can go from high light good co2 to a dark atrophic mess alright, just not
overnight.

The smaller the tank the smaller the plant. The smaller the root mass the
smaller the
plant; get a square glass cube candle holder thingy for a buck at a dollar store
and put gravel and the plant(s) in there. Instant crypt bonsai.
