I swear by the sponge in my planted 29 gallon. I also leave it one all the 
time, and I don't supplement CO2. I do not believe that you could turn the 
air pump on only at night, as the airpump also drives the water flow in and 
out of the sponge. It really is ot pulling any water in without the pump.
