There have been around 2 a year caught in The Western Basin of Lake Erie.
The thing that did the Blues in wasn't pollution, it was the Smelt. The
Blues couldn't digest the jaw bones and their stomachs would literally be
torn and their stomach acid would eat a hole in them and then they would
die. I can remember the dock here having tons of them waiting to be packed
and shipped. My father was the assistant manager of the Fishermen's Co-op
and he showed me what was happening and told me at that time the commercial
fishermen would be blamed for their demise. Hope this helps,
