Hi Rob,
Finally have some young hubbsi from the elderly survivors of the fish
you sent me way back when. As you recall, I put them in 2 outside ponds
of about 1,000 gallons each. In previous years they came into full
breeding color and females looked heavy but no young were produced. I
knew that in nature they have been reported as spawning in warmouth
nests, but I felt that in a small pond the warmouths would have made
short work of them. Wondering if they were obligate sunfish nest
spawners, but the species of Lepomis was not important, this spring I
added a pair of pumpkinseeds to each pond. And happy day, it worked! The
small group of young are about 1/2" long now, but adult sunfish and
shiners are still in breeding color and pumpkinseed males are still on
nest. I have only seen young in one pond, but the other is so thick with
vegetation that I can not examine it carefully. I will empty it in the
fall and check.

By the way, as of this past spring only 5 of the original fish survived
and all appear very old - 1 pair in the pond with young, and a reverse
trio in the other.

Feel free to share this informatioin with the NFC members.

Has anyone else had luck with this fish?
Later,
Dave Schleser
