Hi, From my experience and from what I've read, a mold inhibitor is definitely optional. If the culture container is sterilized before use, the chance for mold becoming a problem during the two to three week life of the culture is small. Fruit flies are commonly studied in universities. Why not call someone in your university's zoology department? Good luck. Bill
