Re: aeration of daphnia cultures

Aeration using large bubbles can help to prevent surface algae, esp. BG
algae which tend to kill off your cultures by blocking oxygen. Outdoor
cultures in sunlight with heavy nutrients, you have to do something. One
guy I know runs his garden hose into the half buried kiddie pool and the
excess crud flows over the edge. He gets huge daphnia crops using the
kiddie pools but he uses sheep manure with lime for starter in spring
and feeds regularly with yeast. Watch out for a pH crash as this will
kill the culture.
