If the organic content isnt too high I would give it a try. I like to
submerge a soil in a bucket for about 3 weeks before adding to the
tank... if there are no horrible smells then it should be okay. If it is
a clay soil, then you should try the dupla approach and mix it into a 1
to 3mm gravel (about half and half) in the bottom third of your
substrate. Top it up with 1 to 2" of clean 1 mm gravel. Do not use
agricultural soil, however, as they may contain various and sundry
pesticides and herbicides. Find a spot away from roads that hasnt been
cultivated recently.
