We know that driftwood can be either branches from the aerial portion
fo the tree or branches from the roots.  I believe the root portions
tend to be denser and sink more easily than the aerial portions.  Some
aerial portions always remain buoyant but this might depend on the
species.  Perhaps the driftwood experts can add to or correct these
comments.
