I have had one species of Cory (polystictus) that lost
barbels in a tank with a mixed bed of flourite and
river gravel.  I have another species in the tank at
the moment where this doesn't seem to be a problem,
but I often wonder if the polystictus was a root cause
of the barbel problem.  

If it were me, I would go with a more sandy substrate
if the Cory's are your primary goal.
