The instant potato flake recipe given is missing one ingredient, the mold
inhibitor. This can be obtained from Carolina Biological, and has a long shelf
life. One advantage of the potato recipe is that you can harvest the maggots.
Shake the adult flies into new cultures or feed them to something. Shake the
culture medium after half filling the culture jar with water. Pour through a
fine aquarium net. Most of the medium except some dried out rinds will rinse
through the net (I've had no problem using tap water) leaving the maggots, a
great food for bottom feeders (such as corydoras, African cichlids) that have
trouble discovering the floating flies.
