I'd re-culture.  I use full strength vinegar with an apple cut up in it.  Put the
apple in an old stocking or somethime silimar to make it easy to remove
when it gets mushy.  I keep my culture out of direct sunlight under a
table.  And that's all I do.  By far the easiest culture to keep.. or the
hardest to kill, depending upon your point of view. ;-)
