The 12 volt compressors sold in the UK must be far supperior to to those 
available here in the states! On several occasions I have tried to run 12 
volt compressors for long durations and after about 3 hours the windings 
burn out!

Yes I agree the refridgerator compressors are real work horses and a saidly 
neglected resource. As for compressed air without electrical supply, the 
battery operated units sold in fishing supply or bait stores are probably 
the best bet economicaly. I don't know where one might get them but I 
understand there are so called oxygen tablets used when mailing fish 
across country, sounds like they would be great for a few days or so.
