[Live-foods] Daphnia Micro-Culture

Hello everyone,

After 3 unsuccessful orders of Daphnia cultures, somehow my 1 single
survivor managed to multiply into a small culture of about 20 specimen. I
tried different containers, water, temps, and environments, and the only
that has proved stable is a 1 gallon jug of green-water sitting on my
balcony in high-indirect sunlight. I had planned to use the green water to
"feed" the culture in a seperate container with a small bubbler and cleaner
water, but the dirty green pond scum seems to be a better home for them.

So, my question is this; *Should I worry about the conditions of the water
they are currently inhabiting?*

Most of the algae and micro-plant life is settled on the bottom and the
water column is slightly cloudy light-pale-green tint. (I can provide
photos.) They seem to like it since they are multiplying, but I'm worried
that if I don't change out some water, denitrify, or aerate, the water will
build up into a toxic environment.

Thanks again for the previous help. My two evil Tankganyikan
Neolamprolugus-Brichardi and thier one small fry love the occasional snack.
I've never seen a more aggresive fish. They have managed to kill and eat a
few dozen ghost shrimp (as big as they are), a snail or two, a Banded Botia,
and almost a Pseudotropheus Acei. I relocated the Acei after he hid
terrified behind the filter in the corner of the tank for two days without
moving or eating. (He's healthy and enjoying a 55 galon with other Malwai's
now).

Sincerely,

John Craig
