Hi Beverly,

Thank you very much for the information.  I will try to
remove the mat.  I wonder if the thick mat would block the
eel's access to the air, thereby killing the vinegar eels.

The talk about "tea mushroom" brought back some memory.
Back when I lived in Japan, "tea mushroom" became very
popular as a type of tonic among health food/supplement
buffs.  I never got into these myself but I thought the
whole cult like movement was interesting.
