Hi George,

Sounds like you have blue green algae (a type of
bacteria) and black brush algae.  They seem to be
outcompeting the green water type algae for
nutrients.  You might want to add some fertilizer
to a batch of the green water that your friend
gives you.  Aquatic gardeners are always
complaining about green water as a result of
overfeeding their plants with fertilizers.

I am sure that you can grow daphnia on yeast
suspension or algae pastes.  But if you want to
grow green water in your outdoor pond again, maybe
you can throw some liquid fertilizer in it and see
what happens.
