Interesting... I've seen similar observations reported before, but didn't
pay much attention to them. Until I set up a 120 gal with 100% Flourite 
substrate. After a couple days the kH dropped from its tap value of about
3.5 to less than 1.0. I bumped it back to 3.5 with baking soda; I had
to do it a couple of times again, until it stabilized for good at the tap 
value (the tank gets a 4% daily water change straight from the tap).

So now I believe that Flourite drops the kH at the onset. Dr. Morin (from
Seachem), any comments on this ?
