Just as an aside, every Piranha genus (Serrasalmus
etc.) attains a length of over 6". Many can grow to
12" or more. They are *very* gregarious by nature,
YOU NEED A GIANT TANK TO HOUSE THESE CRITTERS
PROPERLY!!
I don't mean to yell, but think about what you're
discussing here. Large, carnivorous, schooling fish
are difficult to appreciate in captivity, and if any
one fish is mistreated it is the the piranha. Except
maybe the Oscar...
Mr. Barr noted the whimple piranha. If you have a
"large" tank, and are willing to devote it to one
species, then then Catoprion mento may be an awesome
choice......First, though, you need to find a
distributor, and then find a bank loan. They should be
plant friendly, and would be an incredible alternative
to the discus (which is another oft mistreated fish).
Please forgive my soap-boxing. Many of the LFS's in
this area will sell piranha with no consultation or
thought to the consequenses of their sale.
These fish are best left in the river, or to the
specialists. This is wildly off-topic, but as far as
plant tanks go, piranha (as a rule) are way
inconcievable.

BTW....Most "silver dollars" are also very gregarious
and grow to be quite large. Quite unsuitable for a
plant tank despite their herbivoury.
