For the archives: My problem of inactive MTS on the surface with tightly shut shells was solved by the fourth 30% water change in the last week. I figure this amounted to about an 75% water change. Surviving MTS have disappeared back into the substrate. My best guess was that I introduced some trace pesticide, hand lotion, soap, or something that they were sensitive to.
