Because it's nitrogen in largely AMMONIA.  You do remember that ammonia is 
toxic in even low amounts, right?  I added a little to an uninhabited tank,
(1ml of a Hydroponics fertilizer into a 10g tank), and the ammonia tested
off the scale.
