Grant, I think that you could maybe check on some other possibilities as well: Perhaps the conditions of the room in which the tank is situated - such as humidity levels and temperature changes at night; Something like wood decoration in your tank; Content of the substrate (maybe as it is also heated) - compaction can lead to gases being released (although not necessarily earthy).
