I had *very* similar results as yours when testing the Seachem and Red Sea
test kits, using both the iron reference and my PMDD mix. The only difference 
was that I could use the Seachem kit below 0.5 ppm. The reagent didn't make 
the water yellow, and a 0.1 ppm sample gave a definitely pinkish response,
lighter than a 0.5 ppm sample would. So it might be that yours is expired or 
in some way out of whack ?
