This is oft repeated. Is there any reason to believe it's true?

I've long suspected that the relationship between iron and red coloration
is aquarium lore based mostly on an association between iron and red
(rust) colors. It's my understanding that plants use iron in its ferrous
state, and ferrous iron more normally imparts a green color (not red) to
iron compounds.
