Laterite is a specific variety of clay which is usually (but not always)
found in tropical places like the Amazon. A couple of commercial aquatic
plants supply companies sell it as an additive for your gravel. It promotes
root development and is believed to also supply some iron. If your tank is
working don't try to figure out how to get it into the gravel. If you are
thinking of starting another tank, or starting a current one over again, then
it is one of a few options out there.
