Thayer,

If the ballast buzzes, I think the transformer needs to be replaced. I
don't believe it affects performance or safety. Mine is very noisy too.
I just ignore it. Fortunately, its no longer in the living room.

The place where I bought my MH setups here in Vancouver, Lighting
Liquidators, has serviced my ballasts on a couple of occasions, at no
charge. How's that for service? ;-)
