Lots of dwarf cichlid and killie people I know have tossed breeding stock
into wading pools in the summer. Depending on the climate where you live,
you can get plenty of fry that way.
As for a strong plastic mesh, try plastic canvas from the craft stores. It
will take a bit of it, but it is cheap.
