I would highly recommend using a PVC grid of perforated pipes as a manifold
for your project.
Check out Aquarium Plants(Rataj/Horeman ,pg15) for an idea. Works very well
and won't clog.
Also works very well for planted tanks too, contrary to popular belief!
Personally, I like Flourite myself with no RFUG now, but have had these
RFUG's going still after 10 years+ so they do work very well indeed. Your
soil/substrate will stay very clean which you might or might not want. Less
stuff in the soil and more in the water column were it can be removed
easily. I wouldn't add a RFUG to a pond personally though. Keep it simple
and do the water changes. Hope this gives some direction and / or ideas.
