It's reputation on this list is good enough for me to say without trying it 
that it is one of the 2 or 3 top commercial substrate approaches for planted 
tanks.  Considering that it is used either straight, or mixed to no weaker 
than 50% flourite with gravel, it is also among the simpler to use.  
Condiering that the epoxy-coatedgravel your lfs sells is about $.60/lb, it 
would seem that $1/lb for something that is great for your plants is a 
bargain.
