I have a 48x24x18 tank as well and with the substrate 1" fertilizer and 2"
substate sloping back to 4" in the back made the tank shallower then the
24" limit that the tubes can punch.

The tubes I am using are Osram colour 11 About 6000K.  I have four of them
6" above the tank and with co2 injection, the plants have just taken off!
I let the tank alone for two weeks last month, and when I got back I found
a mini jungle in the tank!

I don't think you will have a problem.
