     There's really nothing to it.  The push-to-start button is wired in 
series with
the lamp's filaments.  Cut the two wires going to it and connect the starter 
to these
two wires.  You can get the starters and the starter sockets at the Home Depot
for a few bucks.  The starter sockets are sold with a pair of lamp holders, 
not individually, so the employees there may not realize that they carry the 
sockets.
Make sure you get the right starter for your lamp, it should be marked on the
package.
