Re: snot algae eating shrimp

I have a number of platies which eat the algae by the ton. This is evidenced
by most of the plant leaves being clean in the morning and masses of algae
colored faeces all over the tank - don't panic I syphon it off every day.
Good news - I have a microscope - I'm going to find out what it is. I have
replaced my fluorescent tubes (I was amazed at the different color of the
light!) to ensure proper light wavelengths, inserted a nitrate sponge in the
filter and reduced the light levels to 40W. The algae has retreated to the
leaves nearest the light. I just don't feel that I have got to the bottom of
this. I know that as soon as I increase the light, the problem will return.
I bought shrimp once - pretty expensive for live food. They lasted about 10
secs and my pack of savage barbs had them ! It was fun to watch, though.
I've had been feeding them on frozen shrimp prior to the introduction of the
live shrimp. Doh !
