Alex Pastor(?) asked about lotus plants. I have red tiger lotus
both in 1/2 inch of dirt and in plain gravel. Both do well, have
never received fertilizer tabs, and have tolerated transplantion.
Are you sure that you want them to do any better? Mine look fine
in the middle areas, but one has to do lots of pruning to keep
them low and preserve light for the other species.
