otos and wood

Just some observations here, I own about 20 otos and have a group of 4
in a 20 gallon tank. I recently removed the piece of Mopanii root from
that tank, and instead of hiding all the time like these guys used to,
they're out and about swimming around the tank. The water chemistry is
no different than before, the water is still stained by tannins, as
there is peat in the substrate. Any one out there notice anything
similar to this? all my other otos have the same wood in their tanks,
and I rarely see them, unless I move the root.
