What instead of Carbon in Fluval?

The article at www.thekrib.com/Plants/Fertilizer/keslar-carbon.html
(Shawn Keslar's carbon experiment) convinced me that I should take the
activated carbon out of filter. I did, and nothing bad happened. Now
I'm wondering what to do with the middle chamber (of 3) of my Fluval
403. The bottom chamber is full of hexagonal ceramic beads; the top
chamber is open cell foam. Any suggestions or comments? (My Seattle
water is *extremely* soft, so I guess I could add some carbonate
material...) Thanks. Sherman Lovell
