Plant weights and driftwood

Some folks have thought that maybe lead strip weights on plants cause CNS
disturbances in fish.   I have tested my tank water (I use lead) and there
is basically no lead in it.

So my questions are:

1.  Does anyone KNOW of a reason not to use lead for plant care in aquaria?
2.  What substitutes are available?  I looked for soft iron but no ceegar.


On an unrelated topic:

How can I get a cubic yard or so of driftwood?   Mopani from Africa would
be OK.   So would US origin wood.   It costs too much around here.   I
would like to get about 1000#.
