Do You Bleach Plant Roots?

I posted a question a while back and never got a response.  I was
wondering if you are supposed to bleach the roots of a plant as well
during a bleach treatment.  As I said in my original post, after I
bleached a java fern  all of the root hairs coming from the rhizome
dissolved.  The plant has continued to live but what about other plants. 
Is it harmful to bleach the roots.  Should you only bleach from the crown
of the plant up.  What about Anubias that are growing on driftwood whose
roots are exposed to algae growth?
