One other note on tank stand construction.  Screws by themselves will not adequately hold together a tank stand.  Use some sort of liquid adhesive i.e. construction-grade liquid
nails to bond the boards together.  The screws will "clamp" the pieces together and add additional strength.  Additionally, using only mdf board, make your solid top rest ON TOP of
the sides - you'll end up with a solid and rigid box.
BTW, I took a close look at a $150 55gallon formica-covered 1/2" mdf stand at the local lsf...the entire upper lip was only resting on a 1/4" lip!
