You are absolutely right about the roundup.
I tested it out in a jar...
Snails (and daphnia dead), algae doing fine.
Paul K. gave me an excellent recommendation which is almost the same as
yours.
Keep them isolated in the dark until they breed and then use the young.
The adults may carry traces of algae which can live indefinitely in the
dark (but not grow).
The offspring should be clean.
