I have also seen that type of behaviour in my 66 gal tank.
I have 4 SAE in it. 2 of them around 1.5" and the 2 others around 3-4" And
it's the 2 large ones who do the circling.
And them doing it didn't come right after water change.
But I can't help with determine what they are doing.
