Hmmmm, that would account for my incredibly good luck since then :-).  I
made so many mistakes with my first tank (ah heck, ALL of them, actually :))
the leaves may have had an artificially early demise.  Would adverse
conditions (low calcium, magnesium, etc.) cause emersed grown leaves to die
sooner?
