Mercury Vapour lamps are ok.

Conventional wisodm dicates they're no good, don't use them. However
poeple DO use them and they do indeed work just fine. They're quite
blue, so if you're really worried, ge a high pressure sodium lamp
tokickin a bit of red. You can get a cheap HPS "security" light
from any good hardware store for about $50 for 70 watts (roughly
6000 lumens)
There was a guy in alt.aquaria in the late 80's that used them and
had terriffic success. Other have tried them since then.
