Re: AGA dues - cashing checks

Hello,

Although I live in the US, I receive about 30-40 Canadian checks each
year. If my experience is any guide, I have to second the opinion that
getting a check drawn in Canada, so it will be cashed by *any* bank in
the US, is a bother.

I have received checks, drawn on the Toronto branch of Bank of Canada,
with a *preprinted* "US Funds" on them, that my bank returned to me,
because the Federal Reserve clearing house would/could not process them.
I even tried to cash this check at the Bank of Canada office in New York
City, but they would not cash it either!

The only Canadian checks that clear without any problem in the US are
those which are drawn on a correspondent bank in the US: The Canadian
Bank has an account at a US bank and the checks are drawn on that
account. (Checks -- *not* Money Orders! International MO clear without
problems. Postal Money Orders in US dollars are OK too.)

Hope this helps.

Best,

George S
