Odd smell on plants

Hi everyone, This is probably an odd question but so is the smell. I've
noticed the last month or two that my aquarium has a smell to it. It's like
dirt, but sharper. When I did a major pruning I took out some CT and mayaca
that had been growing along the surface, the smell was very strong on them.
Is it the plants? Or is it some algae that grows on them? I have a plain
gravel substrate so I know it isn't that. Any ideas?
