java ferns

In APD #245 Anne asked why her java ferns turned brown. I didn't see a
posted response. I have the same problem in my tanks. I have checked
the internet and found various possible reasons for this. One source
said Java ferns don't like powerheads and fast current. Some of the
archives mention possible potassium deficiency. Some suggest it is a
disease and to remove the afflicted leaves. I have tried that and other
leaves start to break down as well. Someone at a LFS said to leave the
leaf on the plant and let it break down naturally since it is still
producing sugars for the plant. All of my other plants in the tank
seem to do well. Any veteran fern keepers who have an idea about the
cause of the problem and how to deal with it.
