If appearance isn't critical, why not just use a 4' fixture and let it hang over
the ends a bit? The 4' bulbs are cheaper and more types are available.
The amount of light emitted from the ends of a FL tube are less than the amount
from areas away from the ends. If you use a longer tube, you will have more even
light across the whole tank rather than the standard "dark corners".
