There are many related worms to the Tubifex and many are used in growing
aquatic plants -- like having earthworms in the garden.  You probably got
them on the roots of some plants that you purchased.  Normally, the fish
don't eat them once they are established in the aquarium; but Loaches and
Corydoras will clean them out if not over-fed.  Regardless, I think that
you will find that they are harmless and actually utilize the detritus that
seeps down into your gravel.
