"Algae" is an extremely vague word. What kingdom various types of algae
belong in varies from text to text.

My microbiology textbook says that according to the five-kingdom system,
algae belong to seven divisions distributed between two different kingdoms.
The five kingdoms are monera, protista, fungi, plantae, and animalia.
Yellow-green, golden-brown, diatoms, photosynthetic euglenoid flagellates,
dinoflagellates, stoneworts, and green algae belong to protista. Brown
algae and red algae belong to plantae. The blue-green algae (or
cyanobacteria) are photosynthetic bacteria and belong to monera.

BUT my general biology textbook says that, except for the cyanobacteria, all
algae belong to protista. It then goes on to say that some biologists still
prefer to place green, red, and brown algae in the plant kingdom.
